The challenge
The word “motivating” likely doesn’t come to mind for the design of the study tools in the product courseware. Precious real estate is taken away from the user for features that are not used immediately. We quickly learned that students prefer to review key terms first and then utilize study tools.
The approach
The study tools are moved to the bottom of the screen in a menu that is able to be swiped down when not in use. This layout follows the student’s mindset of reviewing key terms first, which also allows more of the screen to be accessible for scrolling.
The challenge
Students need encouragement in online courseware, especially when they are taking the time to study on their own. The practice quiz flow gave users the option to mark whether they knew an item or not, and they were presented with a red card along with an “x” icon for not knowing something.
The approach
The user should not be punished for not knowing a key term when they’re in the middle of a study session. To make this a more positive experience, it’s noted that the item they marked will be added to their favorited key terms to remind them to keep practicing.
